Kitchen Layout Mistakes to Avoid (And How to Fix Them)

Designing a kitchen isn’t just about choosing stylish cabinets or countertops — the layout plays a major role in how functional and comfortable your space is. Avoid these common kitchen layout mistakes to create a kitchen that works just as beautifully as it looks.

❌ 1. Ignoring the Work Triangle

The sink, stove, and refrigerator should form a triangle for smooth workflow.
Fix: Keep these three elements within a few steps of each other, forming a triangle that avoids overlap and clutter.

❌ 2. Lack of Counter Space

You’ll always need more prep space than you think.
Fix: Add an island or use foldable countertops and wall-mounted solutions to expand your workspace.

❌ 3. Poor Lighting

Bad lighting can make even the best kitchen look dull and be difficult to work in.
Fix: Layer your lighting — combine ambient, task, and accent lighting, especially under cabinets and over the island.

❌ 4. Not Enough Storage

Cluttered countertops are often due to poor storage planning.
Fix: Use vertical space, pull-out pantry drawers, corner units, and organizers to maximize every inch.

❌ 5. Blocking Traffic Flow

Tight corners or bulky appliances can make the kitchen feel cramped.
Fix: Leave at least 36–48 inches of walkway space between cabinets and islands.

❌ 6. Misplacing Appliances

Putting the oven or dishwasher too far from prep zones slows you down.
Fix: Plan appliances near related zones — dishwasher near sink, oven near prep space, etc.

❌ 7. Forgetting Ventilation

No one wants cooking smells lingering for hours.
Fix: Invest in a powerful and quiet chimney hood or exhaust fan to keep air fresh.

❌ 8. Oversized Kitchen Island

A big island might look luxurious but can eat up space fast.
Fix: Size your island to suit your kitchen, leaving enough room around for easy movement.
